Tamamuri is a huge rainforest tree that can reach 15-25 meters in height. It is located along the lower hills of the river basins of the Amazon, usually along water courses and rivers, where its fruit (like figs, but with one big seed inside) are eaten by fish when they fall down 'tree.

The bark of tamamuri contains flavani, flavonoids, lignin, fenilpropanoidi, benzenoidi and steroids. Many of these elements are entirely new, as the 6 acutifoline and 13 brosimacutine never seen before by scientists.

The long history of use of tamamuri for arthritis and rheumatism has been the subject of research by western scientists. In 2003, Brazilian researchers have reported a crude extract of the bark tamamuri could reduce inflammation induced by various means. Other researchers have reported that two chemical elements contained in tamamuri (the murine A and B) had the property to inhibit the protein kinase C (PKC) and protein kinase A (PKA). The PKC is involved in several disorders and is one of the chemicals that the body uses to produce inflammation. Individuals who suffer from autoimmune diseases, from arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis usually have high levels of PKC: the PKC inhibitors are a new class of drugs currently being examined by the research to treat these disorders.

In addition, PKC, like PKA, is also considered one of the elements involved in the growth of cancer cells and cancer. The property of tamamuri to inhibit PKC and PKA could explain its documented activity against cancer cells. Some researchers have reported a crude extract of the bark had tamamuri cytotoxic action in vitro on human cells of cancer of the colon and lung, as it were toxic against a leukemia cell line (including a line of leukemia cells resistant to drugs). However, one of these research groups have attributed the cytotoxic action not to the inhibitors of PKC, but the recent discovery brosimacutina. But have yet to report the mechanism by which chemical elements that can fight cancer cells.

Although scientists have yet to test the effectiveness of specific tamamuri against syphilis, researchers at Cornell University have documented how the bark of tamamuri has in vitro antibacterial activities against some common bacteria, including Bacillus and Staphylococcus. This same study also tested the effectiveness of the plant against Helicobacter pylori (the bacterium that causes ulcers of the stomach) and Candida albicans, thus confirming two of the traditional uses of bark used for stomach ulcers and yeast infections. It's was also reported on a property against the most common strains of fungi of the skin.

Shipibo Indians of Peruvian Amazonia-Conibo have a legend on tamamuri: believe that when a person ingests the latex white tamamuri, he is the father of a boy from the skin clear. They use the bark also officinale (in decoctions) for gastrointestinal disorders, to purify the blood and regulate the nervous system.
Even the Indians Wayãpi Guinea attribute magical properties  albero: consider that the lattice can protect them from witchcraft and spells. Also, use a decoction of the roots to treat headaches and increase the memory, and bring to soak the root to treat fever.

Tamamuri is a common and respected remedy for rheumatism and arthritis throughout the Amazon and in the systems of folk medicine in South America. It's also a remedy for syphilis, which explains one of its common names, ie mercury plant. Mercury was the main treatment for syphilis in the late and early twentieth century.
